Mandatory self-propelled machine inspection: what you need to know

Periodic inspection of self-propelled machines has become mandatory. Here are the deadlines, what gets checked, and how we can help you pass it on the first attempt.

Deadlines by registration year

Registration period Inspection deadline Status
Before 1983 By 2026 Urgent
1984 to 1996 By 2027 Approaching
1997 to 2023 By 2028 Plan ahead

What the inspection covers

The inspection verifies the vehicle's safety for road use. The main points are:

Braking system

Service brakes and parking brake. Braking efficiency and symmetry.

Lights and signals

Headlights, indicators, position lights, reflectors. Must be working and compliant.

Steering

Steering play, tie rods, drag links. No excessive play or anomalies.

Rollover protection (ROPS)

The rollbar or cab must be present, intact and approved. Mandatory since 2005.

Emissions

Exhaust smoke opacity level. Older engines may have issues.

Bodywork and chassis

Structural integrity, no dangerous corrosion, legible plates.

How we prepare you for the inspection

Our pre-inspection check-up covers every point that will be examined. If something needs fixing, we repair it beforehand, so your machine arrives at the inspection ready to pass.

  • Full braking system inspection
  • Light check and replacement of non-compliant units
  • Steering and play inspection
  • ROPS structure and anchor point verification
  • Exhaust opacity test and engine adjustment
  • General chassis and bodywork check

Frequently asked questions

How much does a self-propelled machine inspection cost?

The cost of the inspection at an authorised centre typically ranges from 100 to 200 euros. The pre-inspection check-up at our workshop, to make sure you pass on the first attempt, varies depending on the vehicle's condition. Call us for a quote.

How long does it take to prepare the machine?

A pre-inspection check-up generally takes 1-2 working days. If repairs are needed (brakes, lights, steering), timing depends on the work involved. Best to book in advance, especially as deadlines approach.

What happens if the machine fails the inspection?

The machine is suspended from road use until the necessary repairs are carried out and a new inspection is passed. That's why it pays to get a check-up first: better to discover problems in the workshop than at the inspection.

Where is the inspection carried out?

The inspection is carried out at centres authorised by the Motor Vehicle Authority. We don't perform the inspection itself, but we prepare your machine to pass it: we check every point that will be examined and fix whatever needs fixing.

Does Bosi SRL perform the inspection directly?

No, the inspection must be done at an authorised centre. What we do is the pre-inspection check-up: we check brakes, lights, steering, emissions, ROPS structure and everything that will be verified, so your machine arrives at the inspection ready to pass.

Is your machine ready for the inspection?

Book a pre-inspection check-up. Better to find problems in the workshop than at the testing centre.
